What Have You Done for Me Lately?

The perks of conversation are too few and far in between. We must remedy the situation by maintaining a constant effort to keep our fans and followers interested. Recency breeds reaction...and our focus as content creators should always be on keeping things fresh. It's good to be so fresh and so clean that our audience keeps coming back for more.

Consistency matters in the chase for relevance.

A small but strong reminder as we continue our social media journey.

The Paradox of Originality

To be original or not to be…that is the question. In the world of new media communication...content is king. The value of quality information cannot be overstated in an arena where audiences are seeking insightful, novel, and useful material.

The blogosphere and world of new media in general is inundated with mediocrity in terms of game-changing and original content that resides on the cusp of innovation. This type of thinking is validated when we consider the fact that many of today’s leading curators pull material from the same well.

We can talk about the concepts of tribes, social graphs, and our sphere of influence but the real excitement comes from those moments in time where we discover the potential of building our own well and content silos.

The paradox of originality exists because we fail to recognize the value of noise reduction. Sharing information from the same well or visiting similar silos magnifies the noise that exists in the digital space.

Original content isn’t only king…it dominates.

Content Is Still King

The battle for audience awareness is in full swing. The race to build a community of raving fans and brand advocates is miles long.

However, some still forget about the ultimate shortcut to engagement and relevance.

Content.

Quality content can be the key that unlocks new doors of opportunity and influence.

Content matters.

On The Outside Looking In

Outside looking in...

Sometimes we become a bit distracted by the awe inspiring and aesthetic elements of our environment. We tend to focus on the fun and exciting aspects of what we see without considering how we could add value. Social media has caught the attention of the masses and for good reason. Anytime we hear the word 'social' we become engaged in the possibilities of meeting new people. However, with social media, we must not forget about why we are here.

Louis Pagan has an excellent post over at Latino Rebranded about the various types of social media users that exist. He does an excellent job of exploring the different personas and user types engaged in social media. We have the insiders and outsiders each with their own goal in mind when it comes to participating in social media.

Rather than focus on our position, let's key in on our purpose. Are we simply looking for a new audience or target base upon which to pour on the sales hoopla or are we actually interested in adding value and engaging with others? Social media success is built upon an effective approach to adding unique value. It becomes easy to point out the outsiders very quickly because they are focused on the aesthetics as opposed to the dynamic inner workings of this phenomenon we call web2.0.

The Democratization of Content

We have journeyed beyond the path of traditional media into a new arena where the content and control are conveniently placed in the hands of the masses. Today it's easier than ever to publish ideas and sound off on virtually any subject imaginable. The essence of social media is built around the people factor.

Consumers are no longer solely a target market or customer segment but rather a democracy of opinion, agents of influence, and dynamic content producers.

User generated content is what makes new media such a hot topic in today's society.

The internet allows us to have a voice and be heard.

The level of immediacy and intimacy offered to individuals is unparalleled in terms of media channels and modes of communication.

Where and what we do with these tools is definitely up to the people.

Social Media & The Essence of Control

Media can be defined as the "extensions of man". Print, radio, and television had a profound impact on the dissemination of information and communication in general. However, new media takes it to a whole another level in terms of real-time collaboration, multi-directional feedback, and conversation. On a bigger stage, social media is putting the control and flow of content in the hands of users.

The Internet has completely opened up the playing field for user generated content. The beauty of social media is that we are the content creators. We get to decide what information we post, what pictures we upload, and what form of entertainment we broadcast.

The potential for creativity and innovation is massive.

Individuals are equipped with the tools to connect with and broadcast to the world on a large scale. Search giants like Google and co. are the aggregators and we are the producers.

Let's just make sure we avoid the mess of offering 'fast food' content.
